Still, what separates that from say, your party’s wizard who loves books and wants to visit Candlekeep? He’s not properly allowed in! He has to ask an Avowed to fetch the books he wants!Ģ. While the Avowed don’t share a god, they may be joined by a worship of knowledge and/or moral desire to keep the tomes. Reverence for knowledge and scholarship – this strikes me as a little closer. That would then open up questions about the world’s most intense job interview – if outsiders are barely allowed into Candlekeep at all, how do they recruit Avowed?ī. Money – is being an Avowed just… a job? Possibly! Despite the religious undertones, this could be more of a live-in caretaker role. What other motivations might there be for this monk-like way of life?Ī. Yet they don’t share a religion! Many of them worship different gods, and there are religious sites within the Library, but this is not a typical religious sect. They reside in Candlekeep and perform daily chores to maintain its running. What motivates the Avowed? With roughly 300 members, this is obviously a question with no single answer, but to elaborate – the Avowed live sort of like monks.
They also have a semi-religious connection to Alaundo the Seer, whose prophecies are repeated in an endless chant by a chosen member of the Avowed. They tend to use “commoner” or “master sage” stat blocks, but their backgrounds vary – some are worshippers of different gods of knowledge and writing, others seem to simply be scholars or academic wizards. Unlike visitors to the library, who mostly must stay in an outer courtyard and request their books of interest be fetched for them (if they are even granted access – payment comes in the form of a rare new tome for the library), they live inside the Great Library itself. The Avowed are the roughly 300 residents of Candleekeep, mostly assistants and scribes with some high-ranking members. More interesting to me than the adventures is the chapter on Candlekeep itself, and particularly its caretakers, the “Avowed”. Still, I like the premise and there are lots of useful ideas in it. Disappointingly, most of the adventures only use a book from Candlekeep as a starting point to then go have some adventure in other places like Baldur’s Gate, a nearby trading post or a demiplane.
